The science of cataracts

A cataract results when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. It is usually the result of normal aging. A cataract may also be caused by certain diseases and medications such as steroids or trauma. A cataract prevents light from being clearly focused, causing blurred vision and problems with glare such as oncoming car headlights at night. However, a cataract does not form on the eye, but rather within the eye.

Glaucoma and blindness

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Some research predicts that by the year 2040 glaucoma may become the leading cause of functional blindness in the U.S. Glaucoma is actually a family of many different diseases that usually causes an increase in the pressure within the eye, damaging the optic nerve. When pressure inside the eye increases and over time the optic nerve is damaged, blind spots in peripheral areas of vision may occur and eventually begin to affect the central vision. Often called the “sneak thief” of sight, most forms of glaucoma do not produce symptoms until vision is already severely damaged and may take many years to do so. However, if caught early the disease can usually be controlled and permanent vision loss can be prevented.

Retina: Like the film in a camera

The retina is the tissue-paper-thin membrane in the back of the eye that acts like the film in a camera. The retina collects information from images projected upon it by the optical parts of the eye and sends it along the optic nerve to the brain, where it is interpreted and experienced as vision.

The cornea is the window of the eye. It is essential for good vision. It helps focus light into the eye, filters harmful ultraviolet rays, and acts as a barrier to prevent harmful matter from entering the eye. Due to its importance for clear vision, diseases that affect the cornea, including injury, genetic, or physiological problems can cause decreased vision or other eyesight issues.

Intermountain Eye Centers offer primary eye care for all types of conditions of the eye and its surrounding structures – both routine and urgent. Our general evaluations screen and treat a wide range of conditions. Routine vision exams, prescriptions for eyeglasses and referrals for contact lens fittings are also offered. Patients who may require sub-specialty ophthalmologic care are often referred after evaluation.
