Dr. Betts is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at Intermountain Eye Center who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of corneal and anterior segment eye disease. His practice includes all forms of corneal transplantation, routine and complex cataract surgery, anterior segment reconstruction, and refractive surgery such as LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL, and refractive lens extraction. Patients throughout Boise and the greater Treasure Valley see Dr. Betts for cornea and cataract care, as well as evaluation for procedures that may reduce dependence on glasses.
Brent Betts grew up in Southern California and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nevada, Reno before completing medical school at Temple University School of Medicine. He finished his ophthalmology residency at Wake Forest University Eye Center, where he served as chief resident, and went on to complete a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center. This training gives Dr. Betts a detailed understanding of corneal anatomy and disease, which supports his work in complex cataract cases, corneal transplantation, and customized refractive surgery planning for patients considering LASIK or other vision correction options. When corneal conditions progress beyond what eye drops or specialty contact lenses can manage, Dr. Betts is trained to determine whether surgical intervention is appropriate.
Dr. Betts specializes in ophthalmology and refractive care. He has has published multiple peer-reviewed research articles and presented his findings at national ophthalmology meetings. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Cornea Society, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and he currently serves as president of the Idaho Society of Ophthalmology. Dr. Betts also has a longstanding interest in humanitarian eye care. He has traveled to Honduras and Bolivia to train local ophthalmologists in surgical techniques used in the United States, with the goal of reducing preventable blindness in underserved regions.
Outside of ophthalmology, Dr. Betts spends his time with his wife and four children.
